Y’all, Friday (July 9) is National Sugar Cookie Day! Yummmm. Sugar cookies are my favorite. I love eating all the icing, while my husband scrapes all the icing off (yay more for me)!
Here are 10 ways to celebrate sugar cookie day with your Pre-K students:
1. Bake Sugar Cookies – Students can help you bake, count cookies, and add the icing/sprinkles. Please be aware of any allergies your students may have. Sugar Cookie Recipe
2. Cookie/Bakery Shop Dramatic Play – Students can pretend to mix and bake cookies in the oven while wearing their aprons. Then they can sell the cookies to customers who come to their store. They will practice counting cookies as well as the money customers give them. I highly recommend this cash register, it’s my absolute favorite and is super durable. It holds up very well. Here is the bakers dress up costume. Also, don’t forget the cookie play food set.
3. Draw Cookies – Children can draw cookies with paper and crayons, whiteboard/whiteboard markers, or chalkboard/chalk. They can practice counting the number of cookies, writing the number, as well as identifying the colors they use.
4. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Read Aloud – This is one of my top ten books of all time, and students really get a kick out of it. Such a cute story. Don’t forget to stop and ask some questions along the way.
5. Cookie Letters – Students will have fun making letters with cookie cutters and playdough. Students will identify the letter and the sound it makes.
6. “Smart Cookie” Counting – Children can practice their number recognition and counting skills in this game. They can count the number of chocolate chips on each cookie. When they flip the cookie over, they can also identify the number. Cookie Counting Game
7. ABC Cookies – Students will get to practice letter recognition, beginning sounds, and CVC word building. Each Cookie has a letter on it, and I love the idea of students tracing that letter with their finger. They can also practice saying the letter sound. Students also have the option to draw a card and find the beginning letter / sound of that word. P.S. they can absolutely pretend to eat the cookies 🙂
8. Cookie Shapes – Children can make cookies using playdough and cookie cutter shapes! They’ll practice identifying shapes and colors. Students will also be working on their fine motor skills as they create different shapes.
9. Cookie Coloring Book – Students can use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to color cookies. They can identify the colors they use and also practice their fine motor skills. Cookie Coloring Book
10. Circle Time Cookie – During morning circle time, students can hold the cookie pillow and share what their favorite type of cookie is. My favorite cookies are…sugar cookies! What’s yours?
Hope everyone has a spectacular rest of the week! Enjoy those cookies 🙂
